Mark Clapp, MD MPH and Alexander Melamed, MD MPH direct the Inference Lab. They are faculty members in the Massachusetts General Hospital Vincent Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and hold appointments at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Clapp is a maternal-fetal medicine physician and health services researcher focused of examining the effects of health policies and practice changes on obstetrical outcomes. In addition, his is exploring opportunities for risk stratification and prediction using machine-learning and EHR data for adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes during labor and delivery.

Dr. Melamed is a gynecologic oncologist and health services researcher who utilizes innovative methods and sophisticated study designs to improve health care delivered to women and patients with cancer. He is interested in how treatment variability across time, space, and providers can be leveraged to estimate causal effects in observational studies, particularly in scenarios where important confounders are unmeasured.
